I have a little hamster called Dolores J. Tinkleman and I'm constantly thinking of new ways to make toys for her. I thought I should share some of my ideas with anyone else that owns a small animal.
Swing
Take the center of a roll of packing or duct tape and hang it in your cage! Make a hole on either side. Take a long piece of shoe lace and thread it through one whole with the end on the outside of the swing. Tie the other end in a knot. Put the other end through the top of the cage and then back into it. Thread the end through the other hole and tie. There you have it!
Feeding toy
Take the center of a used toilet roll and stuff it with sawdust about half way. Then take some dry hamster food and put it in the center. Pack the rest of the roll tightly with more sawdust. Place this in the cage and your hamster will smell the food and have fun getting to it.
Ladder
Use ice lolly sticks and non-toxic glue to form a ladder. You can place this so that they reach on top of plastic boxes or hideouts in the cage. If you can't find any non-toxic glue then keep them together with tight string.
Hideout
Take a used tin can and clean it out thoroughly, making sure there is no scent left. Sand down the edges with sand paper and make sure they're smooth. Put it on it's side and fill it with shredded toilet paper for the hammy to hide in.
Hanging toy
Check out your local second-hand store for some old plastic circular curtain hooks (there's lots at mine). Connect them together as shown and hang it in your hamsters cage. They will have fun going through the hoops and playing with the toy.
